Campaign to End Violence 2017

This May marks the Canadian Women’s Foundation’s annual Campaign to End Violence. All month long, the Foundation is raising awareness and funds for over 450 emergency shelters and violence prevention programs across Canada.*

Did you know?

  • Approximately every 6 days in Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner.
  • 67% of Canadians say they have personally known at least one woman who has experienced physical or sexual abuse.
  • On any given night in Canada, almost 3,500 women and more than 2,700 children sleep in shelters because it isn't safe at home.

Your donation will go to shelters and violence prevention programs that help women rebuild their lives, counsel children who have witnessed abuse, and teach teens about healthy relationships.

Haydee message of support 1. Be Someone’s Lighthouse: During the month of May, we encouraged Canadians to make a donation and send a message of support to a woman in shelter. Click here to see the messages of support that were submitted: We’ve received over 20 of them alongside over $800 in donations!

 2. Shop for GEN1: During the month of May, we encouraged Canadians to visit any Winners or HomeSense store to purchase exclusive items from the Shop for GEN1 collection. 100% of net proceeds supported the campaign: Winners and HomeSense has supported us for over 10 years and has raised over 15 million dollars for emergency shelters and violence prevention programs across Canada! Thank you, Winners and HomeSense!

3. Host a fundraising event and bring the campaign to your own community. Check out our event toolbox or e-mail for more information.

4. On May 3, join the conversation about ending violence against women by taking part in our Twitter Party. Follow @cdnwomenfdn to have your say! Add the event to your calendar.
Post Twitter Party update: Canadians from coast to coast joined the #ShopGEN1 Twitter Party to talk about violence against women in Canada and to learn how buying t-shirts and hats from the Shop for GEN1 line at Winners and HomeSence can make a difference. #ShopGEN1 was trending in Canada with a whopping 7,144 tweets!

The media also took great interest in the survey’s findings: We earned more than 12,000,000 impressions through 27 pieces of media coverage. Our findings appeared in top-tier outlets including Breakfast Television Montreal (syndicated on MSN), Huffington Post Canada and Quebec, Global News, and national CBC Radio News.
