Nominated by: Women’s Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County
Jennifer is an advocate for improved health care services for rural survivors of gender based violence. In 2006, Jennifer joined the Renfrew Victoria Hospital’s (RVH) Regional Assault Care Program (RACP). In 2010, following many years of advocating for the needs of older women, she lead the mandate expansion of the RACP to include a response to older adult abuse. The RVH was featured in the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario magazine in 2013 as an innovator in meeting the needs of rural woman as the first Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Treatment Center in Ontario to expand its mandate with dedicated funding for older adult abuse. This funding included the development of a crisis housing program to meet the unique, emergent housing needs of older adults in an under resourced rural community. Jennifer has also been an advocate related to the significant health impacts of strangulation. She has trained hundreds of local service providers including police, paramedics, emergency room nurses, physicians, VAW agencies, Child Protection Services and crowns related to the negative health impacts of strangulation. Jennifer has presented locally, regionally, provincially and internationally promoting the needs of survivors of violence and sustainable solutions to providing quality care within rural communities.
