Julie S. Lalonde
Ottawa, ON
Nominated by: Women’s Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County

Julie S. Lalonde is an Ottawa-based women’s rights advocate. Her master’s research was on the daily experiences of economically disadvantaged elderly women in urban and rural communities and used the Ottawa valley as her rural sample. She was the manager of “Working Together for a Stronger Renfrew County”, a Status of Women funded project looking at the needs of rural sexual assault survivors. Julie has over a decade’s worth of experience working with sexual assaults survivors as an advocate, support worker and public educator. She also brings her own personal experience as a survivor of intimate partner violence and stalking and travels across the country educating bystanders on how to prevent sexual violence through bystander intervention. Living in Ottawa but with extensive knowledge of Renfrew County, Julie S. Lalonde is ideal for this project because she has gained the trust of local women by having successfully advocated for them, while also living outside the community and therefore being seen as a confidential confidante and source. Women trust that she has their backs and are comfortable disclosing to her because they don’t fear running into her at the local grocery store or hockey game because she lives in Ottawa. In this way, she is uniquely positioned and an asset to this project.
