When you want to achieve an important goal, it often helps to set a deadline.
So how about a deadline of 16 days?
The goal? To help end violence against women.
We know it’s a tall order, so don’t worry, you’re not in it alone! Women and organizations around the world will be be participating in the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
This 2-week event kicks off with International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on Nov. 25 and ends with International Human Rights Day on Dec. 10. The campaign, now in its 24th year, originated at the Center for Women’s Global Leadership of Rutgers University.
As an organization dedicated to helping end violence against women in Canada, the Canadian Women’s Foundation suggests 5 ways you can get involved during the 16 days and beyond:
1. Learn: To better understand the extent and impact of violence against women across Canada, take a look at our fact sheets and infographics. You can also check out our tip sheets, which offer strategies for how to recognize healthy relationships, what to do about online abuse, and how to help women experiencing domestic violence.
2. Connect: Follow us on Twitter and Facebook to join a national conversation on gender equality. There’s strength in numbers, so spread the word among your own networks!
3. Give: With the holiday shopping season almost upon us, give gifts that give back with our Shop for Hope collection at Winners and HomeSense! Proceeds from these exclusive products support more than 450 women’s shelters, violence prevention programs and teen healthy relationships programs across the country.
4. Invest: Support our work to stop violence, end poverty and empower girls in Canada! When you donate to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, you are investing in the strength of women and the dreams of girls and making a lasting difference.
5. Act: We’re publishing a special blog series during the 16 days with suggestions on how to take action to end violence against women – join us on our blog, Twitter and Facebook! Additionally, many communities will host events throughout the 16 days and will hold vigils in remembrance of the Montreal Massacre on Dec. 6 – have a look at your local event listings.
