Why Support Survivors of Sexual Assault

Woman lookingWhen I was in school if a girl cried "rape", she was forever labelled a slut. I remember upon entering grade 10 a girl was pressing charges against a boy for rape. He was a popular athlete in our school at the time. I remember how terribly she was slandered and slut shamed, by practically everyone. It seemed as though no one was on her side. It seemed even the police were making her out to be a slut. It was her fault she got raped.

So the rest of us kept our mouths shut. We did not want to be in her shoes and we did not know how to support her.

Woman yelling at computerLike many of you, my main interaction with technology is what I find on my cell phone, my laptop and my kids’ play devices. I am not tech-savvy and I cannot be described as a geek or a nerd, except in that I wear glasses and watch Star Wars. I don’t usually worry about what lies behind the platforms, interfaces and social media sites that I waste so many important hours on.

But recent events have opened my eyes to the huge world out there of code, engineering, design and innovation that does not usually impinge on my field of work in youth programming, healthy relationships, women’s safety and rights.

I wear denim because...It wasn’t too long ago when jeans made headlines - not for being comfortable or stylish - but because of an absurd judgment made by an Italian high court in a sexual assault case.

On July 12, 1992 in Italy, an 18 year old student was picked up by her driving instructor for her first driving lesson. He then drove her to a secluded pathway and brutally raped her. She bravely pressed charges against him the following day, despite his threats to kill her if she spoke out.

Before the end of today, you might notice a few small media stories mentioning that it’s International Women’s Day. If you’re like many Canadians, you might wonder why we still need a day like this, especially in a country like ours.
