Kathy Tuccaro with her truckKathy Tuccaro never pictured herself as a heavy equipment operator, but a skilled trades program at Women Building Futures helped her take her life in a new direction.

AT JUST SEVEN years old, Kathy Tuccaro started running away from home.

She says she was first molested as a young child living in foster care, and continued to experience verbal, physical, and sexual abuse during her childhood, as well as throughout her adulthood life.

She went on to have a daughter and become a nurse, but was haunted by her past. She struggled with self-harm, toxic relationships, and alcoholism.

Woman with striped shirtIn a sparsely furnished meeting room in suburban Ottawa, a group of young women sit in a circle, talking quietly. Outside, you can tell spring is on the way.

The women are members of Young Women at Risk, a weekly support group for women who have experienced violence. Each Thursday, they meet in a former classroom of a converted school, now an outreach centre for young mothers. The room contains a few chairs, a children’s playhouse in primary colours, two diaper change tables, and a folding table with an urn of stale coffee. The sound of children on their way to the playground can be heard echoing out in the hallway.

ButterflySince the fall 2014 publication of the ground-breaking “NO MORE” Report of the Task Force on Trafficking of Women and Girls in Canada”, the Canadian Women’s Foundation has made dramatic strides to combat sex trafficking in Canada. Through a five year strategy, the Foundation addresses this abhorrent crime in three strategic areas:

1. Financial support for critical anti-trafficking efforts.

2. Promotion of a collective action approach with many important stakeholders.

3. Sharing of knowledge and expertise to promote system change at the three levels of government.
